Did you know that nearly two-thirds of people in the UK say that they have experienced a mental health problem? This could include depression, anxiety, panic attacks and OCD. As someone who suffers from anxiety, I wanted to share my ways of dealing with it and hope these can be helpful for you too.
Write things down
Maybe journaling might be a bit too much when you have a lot on (it definitely is for me) but I found creating a calendar on Google Forms (Google version of Excel) helps me to visualize the next couple of weeks and the next couple of months. My phone battery died recently and I used to note down EVERYTHING saved to my iPhone calendar, that died and that’s when I started to freak out. I even missed out on a friends invite to drinks last night as I merely forgot. For me, writing things down gives me clarity as an overview of everything going on. I can get a bit overwhelmed with stresses at work, keeping fit, having a good work/ life balance, making sure I see my family enough, dating, chores, driving lessons and blogging. Having one big calendar allows you to slot everything that you’re doing into one document.
Have a clear out
Now I don’t know if you believe in this whole ‘feng-shui’ crap or not, but I think there is some substance to it. If my room is slightly untidy or I’ve left an outfit on the floor as I couldn’t decide what to wear, it makes me anxious. Clutter can affect my mood and make me irritable, so definitely invest in storage space and get organising. Buy flowers for your desk at work
I did this this week and I really saw and felt a difference in my mood instantly. Getting flowers brightened my desk space and according to a team of researchers from the State University of New Jersey, flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. Study participants reported feeling less depressed, anxious and agitated after receiving flowers, and demonstrated a higher sense of enjoyment and life satisfaction.
Take time off for yourself
Sometimes when I’m feeling overwhelmed or burnt out, I find taking annual leave and having a pamper day works wonders. That might include having a long lie in, having a delish cooked breakfast, going to get a manicure or pedicure or even just running yourself a bath with one of those amazing Lush bath bombs and a face masks can do wonders.
Spend time with people who make you happy
Whenever I’m having a shit day, or something or someone has pissed me off, I can spend just five minutes with my smiley gorgeous nephew who smothers me in kisses and can forget about the situation. Surround yourself around friends and/ or family and remember to laugh.
