We all have that one person. You know who it is. When you’re feeling a bit pants you can message them and they’ll make you feel amazing instantly. Except they’re a bit of a Fuckboy. But let’s be honest, who doesn’t like a bit of attention?
So I was having a bit of a moment the other day. I wanted to message him, but it’s like Spotify knew?! Thank you Spotify gals, you gat me because the amazing Dua Lipa’s New Rules came on THAT VERY SECOND.
My love, he makes me feel like nobody else, nobody else
But my love, he doesn’t love me, so I tell myself, I tell myself
One: Don’t pick up the phone
You know he’s only callin’ ’cause he’s drunk and alone
Two: Don’t let him in
You’ll have to kick him out again
Three: Don’t be his friend
You know you’re gonna wake up in his bed in the morning
And if you’re under him, you ain’t gettin’ over him
These are rules we tell our friends over a bottle of red and really should be telling it to ourselves.
As the New Rule Queen said: “It’s the kind of thing that you go up to your friends and you tell them, like, ‘Don’t go back to that man, here are some rules.’ You’re always way better at giving your mates advice rather than yourself. This is me taking on my own problems and actually setting myself some rules for not going back to this guy who keeps messing me about.”
So that next time you get the urge to message or talk to that person, play this on repeat (at least 10 times is sufficient) and throw your phone across the room.
Practice makes perfect
I’m still tryna learn it by heart (I got new rules, I count ’em)
Eat, sleep, and breathe it
Rehearse and repeat it, ’cause I… (I got new…)
Dua’s clearly been in our shoes before too…
But thank you – I got new rules, I count ’em.
