My time working in east London recently came to an end, and as I move onto pastures new, I reminisce about the places I spent with friends and dates over the past 2 years in this sometimes forgotten area of London. When you hear someone talk about east London it’s usually Shoreditch/ Brick Lane/ Old Street, but what about the Docks? What about Newham, East ham? These are the areas that are brimming with diversity and hidden gems, and I don’t know about you but I am bored of the standard dating scene and the same old date ideas. So I’ll be listing my 7 favourite places for you to check out and that will definitely impress your date – whether its the first or the tenth.
Take a ride on this at sunset and you’ve got the most gorgeous view of the city and an original, inexpensive date right there at £3.50 per person each way. I recommend bringing two small bottles of Prosecco and some straws, you know… to settle those nerves. If, by the time you get to the O2 and aren’t freaked out about their porcelain cat collection, why not head for a second drink at All Bar One or grab a bite to eat?
Station: Royal Victoria
Channel your inner Danny Zucco and Sandy and head to Moe’s Diner for some American style dining. This is more a fourth/fifth date kind of vibe – but still a cool one to check out. Ring up in good time and you might even be able to book the car booth.
My Favourite out of the 7. I came here with a friend after work for dinner and my god! What a beaut of a restaurant! Sat on the Docks you get an amazing river view and the food is to die for, I of course had the Pad Thai. Tasty and cheap – and bottles of wine are reasonable too.
Station: Royal Albert DLR
A really cool first date idea. There’s so much to do here, from grabbing a drink to catching a roof top film, ordering a tasty pizza to even playing a game of bowls – no need to stress about potential awkward silences, Roof East has you covered.
I went to this place with two close friends. Situated on the Woolwich Arsenal dock of the River Thames, this is the cutest and cosiest italian restaurant I have been to in south east London. With Italian regional specialities on the menu, such as favourite burrata Pugliese, this place will definitely impress a date. You can thank me later 😉
Station: Woolwich Arsenal
This no frills and no fuss cafe is in the heart of East Ham high street where you can get authentic Thai food. You’ll be greeted by Tippy herself, who makes you feel like you’re in her home with her warm service. More of 6/7th + date.
Station: East Ham
Take your date here for good wine and delicious, rustic Italian food. With a stunning view of the St. Katherine docks, it’s gorgeous for a date in the British summer (I know… if we get one of course!)
Station: Tower Gateway
